From an early age, I built plastic models, mainly aircraft, but also some spacecraft, vehicles and buildings. Early ones were fairly crude, later builds more advanced, but all part of a learning curve in modelling.

When I started building and flying Radio Controlled aircraft in 1983, the plastic models were put to one side as balsa dust took over.

Almost 30 years later, all my goals in R/C flying have been achieved, and now with a young family, I no longer have the space, money or interest to invest in large R/C aircraft.

I do however still have an interest in aircraft, and also in modelling, but the last time I worked in plastics for a hobby, I never did much more than building models out of the box.

Getting back into plastic modelling is a very cheap hobby in comparison. It has also given me the chance to explore kit-bashing and intricate detailing, an aspect of the hobby I hadn't previously explored much.

The first couple of builds were 1/35 scale vehicles, a slightly modified Jeep, altering it to resemble my own vehicle. This was followed by a Dodge Weapons Carrier which had the rear body scratch built to match a friends truck. The fullsize truck would become mine in August 2010!

The next couple of builds were a 1/72 scale diorama and a 1/48 scale jet. The Crash Recovery diorama was the first serious detailing and kit-bashing project, and presented a challenge working in this small scale.

The YP-59 jet was predominently a one day competition model, but also an experiment in painting and finishing techniques.

In October 2010, I finished the 1/48 scale Curtiss P-36 Hawk, built as a cutaway model. This was another experiment in fine detailing in preparation for building one of the large bombers I have as a cutaway model.

Planned as a fairly quick build, the last project for 2010 was a 1/48 Spitfire IX, built as a present day Spitfire restoration in the paint shop following restoration work. It was completed two days before the end of the year.

The 'Hangar Queen' B-17 followed the Spitfire, as part of the B-17 Group Build competition on the ARC Forum. This model was completed in July 2011.

The next model is likely to be the B-26 Marauder, although I am also currently working on a large, N scale model railway commission. This railway has several plastic aircraft kits in addition to buildings and ships, so there's plenty to keep me occupied.
