Maintenance 3

Transmission
Replace Oil Every 6000 Miles
Capacity - 3/4 Quarts
Grade - SAE 90

The transmission has its fill plug ( 'A' ) on the top left side, just above the chassis cross member ( early transmissions had it on the right ). The drain plug ( 'B' ) is lower and just ahead of the cross member. Access is between the exhaust and cross member, and as the oil is drained warm, caution must be taken with the hot exhaust.

Transfer Case
Replace Oil Every 6000 Miles
Capacity - 1  1/2 Quarts
Grade - SAE 90

The transfer case has its fill plug ( 'A' ) on the top right side. The drain plug is on the bottom.
( 'B' ), accessed through a hole in the skid plate. Also visible is the speedo drive ( 'C' ). At the front of the transfer case, there is a grease point for the two shift levers. This is difficult to reach, accessed through a hole in the skid plate.

Oil Filler, Filter & Sump
Check Level Daily
Capacity - 5 Quarts Dry ( 4 Qt Refill )
Grade - SAE 30

The oil filler neck and dipstick ( 'A' ) and oil filter housing ( 'B' ) are shown above. Check oil level daily. Drain sediment every 1000 miles. Replace element every 6000 miles. The engine oil drain plug is located on the left side of the sump, and can be seen looking to the rear of the front wheel and ahead of the spring anchor.

Battery
Check Water Level Weekly

Hotchkiss Jeeps usually have two 12v batteries, Willys and Ford Jeeps normally have one at 6v or 12v. Check water level ( 'A' ) is 1/2 inch over plates and that battery is not leaking. Top up with distilled water. Check for corrosion on terminals ( 'B' ) and battery tray.

Air Filter
Check Oil Level Weekly
Capacity - 5/8 Quarts

On the Hotchkiss Jeep, because of the second battery, the air filter is on the left side of the engine bay. On the Willys and Ford, it is on the right. Clean air cleaner element and check oil level weekly.

Fuel Filter
Drain Sediment Weekly

The fuel filter is mounted on the front of the dash, on the left when facing the rear of the vehicle. Check for leaks and unscrew the plug and drain weekly. Ensure no fuel spills onto the starter motor during draining.

Radiator
Check Level Daily
Capacity - 11 Quarts

Check the radiator ( 'A' ) level daily and top up until water is visible. Excess will be expelled via the overflow pipe ( 'B' ).
