Maintenance 1

This page shows some of the general points of maintenance, grease nipples, oil drain plugs etc. and the frequency of lubrication changes. It is not intended as a manual for maintenance, but just to identify the location of the various points of service. Service times should be reduced by 1/3 to 1/2 in extreme conditions, particularly in sand, dust and salt water conditions.

Grease Points - Grease Every 1000 Miles
Front Spring Shackles

On the right side of the jeep, there are two grease nipples on the front spring shackle, and one at the anchor at the rear of the spring. On the rear of the left side spring, there is an additional torque spring which also has a grease nipple.

Brake & Clutch Pedals

There are two nipples on the clutch and brake pedal shaft.

Rear Spring Shackles

Both rear springs are identical, having a single nipple at the front anchor, and two on the shackle at the back.

Steering Bellcrank

There are several grease points around the steering bellcrank. Point 'A' is on the pushrod between the steering gearbox and the bellcrank. Shown in the next picture, is a second grease point at the other end of the drag link, where it attaches to the steering box. Points 'B' are the inner ends of the tie rods on the bellcrank, also shown in the picture to the right. Point 'C' is the bellcrank pivot. The picture to the right shows the grease point on the outer end of the tie rod.

Front Prop Shaft

These pictures show the rear end of the front prop shaft. The two, difficult to reach grease points, are on the crucifix of the universal joint, and on the shaft itself for the sliding joint. Both are hidden by the skid plate. The front end of the shaft has one grease point on the crucifix joint ( 'A' ). Also shown is the front diff drain plug ( 'B' ).

Rear Prop Shaft

The rear shaft is much easier to assess. There are three grease points in total. There is one on each crucifix joint and the third is at the handbrake end of the shaft for the sliding joint.

There is one other difficult to reach grease point on the front right of the transfer case for the High/Low Ratio and 2/4 wheels drive shift lever pivots.
