2004, the Last Flying Season

2004 began at the start of May, with two flights at Withernsea, in 20 mph wind on the first day and 10 mph on the second. At the end of May, four more flights were made at Longhorsley in winds ranging from 5 to 15 mph.

By this point diesel was getting more expensive ( around £0.70/ltr ), and it was costing about £150.00 per weekend towing the trailer. Due to the cost, we were considering cutting back on the number of shows we attended.

At the end of July, the last two flights were made at Seething airfield, another former 8th Air Force B-17 base. An appropriate base considering the crew of the real "Hang The Expense" made an emergency landing there.

It wasn't planned to be the B-17's last flights, but soon after, I fell ill with asthma, and was unable to physically manage to transport and operate the aircraft.
