Ongoing Work in 2025

To assist the new batteries with cold starts, particularly when the oil was very cold and thick, it was time to remove the starter and give it a clean up. This was last done five years ago, a couple of months before Covid hit. As you can see from the pictures, the contacts on the motor were black. The copper contacts were cleaned up and polished as in previous years and the sliding gear lubricated.

Removing the starter this time was much easier. The large original Hotchkiss voltage regulator was now missing from the firewall, as it wasn't needed with the one wire alternator. This gave much more space to work in to reach the starter bolts.

Possibly as a result of the original Hotchkiss generator/alternator failure, sometime in 2023, the batteries must have been damaged to some degree and were no longer holding a full charge.

I replaced the original unit with a new 24 volt alternator in late April 2024. This was providing charge for the batteries and there was enough power for starting, so long as the batteries were kept on a maintenance charger.

Once driving to an event, the alternator kept them charged enough to start up at the end of a show and come home. However, the batteries weren't great and I finally replaced them in mid-March.
