North East Land, Sea and Air Museum - March 8th

It was a cool, misty and thankfully uneventful trip to the museum on Sunday morning, but it didn't take long for the sun to come out. This wasn't a full on event, but more of a get together of some re-enactors as a pre-season practice. There had been some Jeeps the day before, but they were at another event on Sunday, so for visiting vehicles, it was just my Dodge and a Ferret.

I spent most of the morning, looking round the museum, shooting pictures and video for a Youtube video. It's been a while since I'd been to the museum, so there were quite a few new displays, aircraft moved around and some new additions.

Many of the trams have left the museum for a new location, so that space has been converted to displays connected to local history. The Victor Airtourer, Amy Johnson's Moth replica and the Hurricane replica represent some of the aviation local history. Last time I was there, the Hurricane was just a bare welded steel frame. In what used to be the restoration hangar, which wasn't generally open to the public, there is now a BAE Hawk, Westland Seaking rescue helicopter and a Tornado F3.

I was looking at the Trident, when one of the members came over with the keys, and let me take a look inside. This aircraft was rescued from Teeside airport, but moving it required the wings and fin to be cut off. The long term plan is to have some brackets made to rejoin these parts, when finds and space allow. Outside, there are also three new boats on display or being worked on, representing the maritime history of Sunderland.

Another new arrival since last time is this Hawker Hunter. There's already one in the main hangar, I think in Danish markings. I don't know where this RAF example came from. In the naval Romney hut, there's a rather impressive warship, tucked in behind the Sea Venom fighter. Once I've produced the Youtube video, I'll add it here and to the video gallery page, as that will show a lot more of the museum than these few pictures can.

The trip home was quite cold, as it had clouded over and the wind picked up, but it was another uneventful trip, so I'm slowly regaining confidence in the Dodge. I'm always apprehensive for a while after some mechanical issue.
