My Workshop

My workshop is built behind the garage and is 23 feet x 12 feet overall internal dimensions. There are two doors, a set of French doors in one side and a single wide door into the garage. The workspace was designed with workbenches around the side of the room allowing the large 17 x 8 feet floor area to also be used.
Just inside and round to the right of the French doors is a tall storage cupboard. Just to the left of this is my Disc/Belt Sander, Scroll Saw and a Microwave Oven, mounted on a 2 feet wide bench. Just above the sander out of the picture is a workshop air cleaner to remove fine airborne dust.

Under the bench on the right is an inverted vacuum cleaner, drawing dust away from the sander via a flexible hose. The Microwave is used for thinning epoxy prior to mixing or to create a faster cure.

Across the end of the room, below a large window is a 12 x 3 feet bench which is my main building area. Under the bench is open for leg space while working in a seated position, and one of the two twin radiators.

Above the window is a narrow shelf to store strip wood. Twin power points drop down at each side of this bench, and are positioned at 6 feet intervals around the room. The box in the corner is one of the cats beds, so he can watch me work.

Running down the opposite wall to the French doors, is a 20 x 2 feet bench, with cupboards above and below. This wall is my main tool storage area, with the larger power tools in the cupboards below. The door at the far end is the door leading into the garage, which is a similar size to the workshop.

At the far end of this bench are my metal working machines.

From the left is my bench grinder, lathe and pillar drill/mill. The bench narrows towards the door to give a clearer access, and the narrow cupboard below this bench is my metal store. The brick pillar supports the RSJ that holds the upper floor of the extension over the garage. Everything to the left of this pillar is below the house second floor, to the right the workshop has a pitched roof.
To the left of the garage door is a 7 x 3 feet sloping bench, inclined towards the sink on the left of the picture. Supporting the right end of this bench is a wide cupboard. The left end is supported by a brick housing for the trailer 'A' Frame which sticks through the wall, under the bench, to save space in the garage. The bench is angled to allow items to be rubbed down with wet & dry and have the sludge drain towards the sink.
The bench extending to the left of the sink has a large vice attached, and below is my compressor, airbrush and paint store. The sink being close by allows for easy cleaning, and because the door is close fumes are drawn outside, especially when the garage door is also open. A telephone, intercom and fire extinguisher are also mounted to the wall here.
This external view from the rear shows the section of the workshop which sticks out into the back garden. This was taken before the second floor of the house was added above the garage.
