Bodytub Alterations

Hotchkiss made several small changes to the Jeep over the course of their development. some are less noticeable such as converting the Jeep to 24 volts from the original 6 volt. Other changes such as slightly different sized and style wheels/tyres, metric instruments, and electric wipers with their metal built in hood rests are more noticeable.

The mirror was the first of the small details to change. Hotchkiss changed this for a much larger, more rectangular shaped mirror, whereas the Willy's original was a circular design.

The original Hotchkiss Hood/Screen rests were metal straps around the wiper blades themselves. Wooden blocks were added to replace them, but ironically, the jeep probably left the factory in 1958 with the wood block rests.

The French KPH speedo was replaced with an MPH version. The other dials remain French at this time, as does the instrument panel starter switch, rather than the floor starter which was once fitted to this jeep.

Manual wipers purchased in January 2006 replaced the Hotchkiss Electric versions. A small bush was needed for each wiper shaft since the hole in the screen was too big. I have yet to remove the old screen rest bolts and fill the holes.

The jeep I am copying is an early model which didn't have a Black Out light fitted. The Hotchkiss B/O light is different to the Willys version anyway, so it was removed in April '06, the holes welded and the fender re-sprayed.

The original glovebox door and data plates have been removed and kept, as these contain the identity of the Jeep. A replacement door and MB data plates have now been fitted.
