April 13th - Ignition Unit Failure

On April 13th, I set off for the Yorkshire MVT Crank Up event at York Castle. Heading South on the A167, I got about 20 miles from home, when there were two large mis-fires, and rough running. I pulled to the side of the road and the engine cut out and wouldn't restart.

For the first time in nine years, Jessie had to be recovered, via the RAC. After messing around with the Jeep on the drive, I narrowed the problem to the ignition system, and more precisely, the Jolley Engineering electronic ignition unit
( purchased in 2010 ), which was no longer giving a spark.

The points and condenser were removed from the other Jeep, and using the original coil, distributor and plugs, the engine started up straight away. The unit had only done 1700 miles, in 3 years 9 months. After some complaining and returning the unit for testing, Jolley Engineering replaced the unit FOC, despite being out of warranty.

I have now purchased a set of points, condenser and base plate, so that in future, if the electronic ignition unit fails, I can swap to the traditional system in about 10 minutes, and should still be able to continue my journey.
