Ongoing Work in 2008

October 11th '08 - Screen Clamp Spacer

Another small job was removing the wooden Hotchkiss spacers under the screen clamps as Willys Jeeps never had these fitted. These spacers were only needed when the electric wipers were fitted with the metal hoop protectors around the wiper blades.

Hinging Registration

A job I've been meaning to do for ages, but never got around to was to put the front registration plate on a hinge. This allows it to swing out of the way for photographs.

Jerry Can Removal

Since airbase Jeeps didn't go far, a Jerry Can wasn't really an appropriate feature. Today this was removed from the Jeep and the rust behind it treated before repainting. Most events we go to are easily within the range on the main fuel tank.

If we do drive to events further away, we normally camp, and as a result, we have the trailer. Because of this, I've fitted the Jerry Can to the trailer to maintain the Jeeps range on those longer trips.

To fill the space left behind on the Jeep, I've painted a 10 inch star, as I've seen several wartime airbase Jeeps with a star, particularly early MB's.

April 27th '08 - Inverting the Bumperettes

Many wartime pictures of Army Air Force Jeeps show the Bumperettes to be mounted inverted. It's something I've been meaning to do for some time and eventually got around to it. They came off ok, and the area was cleaned, primed and painted in preparation for them going back.

One Bumperette also had a wider tapered area than the other which I think came from a later model of jeep. This was cut down to match the first and is now waiting for the white primer to dry before markings can be applied.

The picture to the left shows the bumperettes as they were originally, the normal way up and one wider than the other. To the right is the inverted Army Air Force look. They still need the 100th BG markings added, but I'll do that after the 'Route to Victory' tour when the Jeep will appear in 9th Air Force 437th Troop Carrier Group markings.

February 9th '08 - New Steering Wheel

Following the trip to Stoneleigh last weekend, I helped George fit his new horn button & cable etc to his M201 jeep. It was a bit difficult pulling the electrical wire down the steering column and out of the small hole at the base, but we got there in the end! We also swapped steering wheels. He took my M201 type and I got his Willys wheel. The Willys wheel previously had an airborne quick release fitted which has now being sold.

February 3rd '08 - New Brake Shoes Purchased

After lugging the heavy trailer around last year, I decided to splash out on a complete set of new brake shoes. These were purchased at the Stoneleigh Military Fair, though they won't be fitted until the weather warms up.
