Kitting Up

B-4 Life Preserver

The next item to be put on is the B-4 Life preserver. This goes on over the head first. It's quite difficult to fit the big fleece lined collar through the neck hole and also avoid trapping the straps.

There are three straps that need to be fastened to hold the B-4 in place.

The first strap goes between the legs and then up the back. Reaching and twisting to put on the B-4 preserver is now quite difficult due to the layers of clothing.

The side strap passes through the bottom strap at the rear. It also passes through the top strap which hangs down the wearers back.

The flying jacket art can be seen in this picture.

After passing through the top and bottom straps, the side strap reaches all the way around the wearer to fasten onto a metal loop on the right side of the B-4 Preserver.

Parachute Harness

On top of the B-4 preserver goes the parachute Harness. This allows the chute and harness to be detached in the event of a water landing.

This is a 'Yellow Group' harness, designed with the snap hooks attached to risers on the harness.

'Red Group' harnesses had loops on the harness and snap hooks on the 'chute.

After the arms are put through the shoulder straps, the chest snap hook is fastened.

Two more straps with snap from each side extend around and down from the waist and connect to straps that pass between the legs, upwards and around the waist

These straps stop the wearer from falling out of the bottom of the harness.

Finally the A-4 chest parachute is clipped onto the risers and is ready for use.
