Battlegroup North, Elvington
Airfield - May 10/11th
This was the first event of the year that I got to
(after the Jeeps Crank up break down ), but even this trip wasn't without
trouble. It was the first time for the Dodge towing the trailer after recently
fitting the trailer socket and swapping the trailer bulbs for 6 volt. The
journey to Elvington is about 90 miles, and it was an uneventful trip. I was
to display inside the museum grounds, but the gate was blocked, so parked up
and switched off the engine to wait. When I came to restart, the engine
wouldn't fire. I was getting no spark, so fitted a replacement condenser. This
time the engine did fire, but coughed, banged and spluttered and then died. I
fitted yet another condenser, and this time all was well! I think my vehicle
electrics have something against Yorkshire!
This was also the first test of my new canvas tent.
Inside the canvas tent, my pop up tent has just enough room to be set up,
giving an extra layer of warmth.
There is also enough room left to set up the
cooker, use a box as a table and on the other side my fridge and water supply.
This layout worked very well and there was enough room for a seat so I could
it and eat. The box contained a 12 volt battery which also powered a mains
inverter and light.
To the left, the memorial at the Yorkhire Air Museum,
to the RAF and Commonwealth personnel who served in WW2.
While these Friday evening photographs make it look
like good weather, the rest of the weekend was a mix of blustery wind and
heavy showers, including a good thunderstorm! However, the dry spells were
longer than that of the showers, and the forecast didn't keep those displaying
or the public away. It was difficult to tell numbers, with the site being so
big, but apart from during the rain showers, there were always plenty of
people to see.
In addition to the road run late Saturday afternoon,
which can be seen leaving the museum in the video above, there was also a 25
pounder field gun firing display both days, a brief clip of which can be seen
below.
