June 23rd

For a while, the Dodge has had some starting problems when hot, after a long run. On the way home from the Great North Fly In, there were a  few occasions when the engine was misfiring, however, it kept running and I got home. Today I decided to investigate further. The carburettor was stripped and cleaned and the air filter was checked. The plugs and points had the gaps checked and the ignition wire termainals were cleaned. The points were recently replaced when at Blyth, so I knew they were ok.

I wasn't getting a huge spark at the points, and suspected the coil may be to blame. For most of the time I've had the Dodge, it has turned over several times when starting, and often fires when the starter is released and the current flows to the coil. I had a new and unused spare, so that was fitted, along with a new King lead. I also found the insulation on the positive wire distibutor terminal was worn, and wrapped some insulation tape around so it couldn't short on the case.

The Dodge now starts almost immediately, and a four mile test drive seemed ok. I am yet to see if it is ok on a longer run, and whether the hot start problem has gone.
